Your beliefs don’t have to depend on any existing belief system.

Ever since I started working with the spiritual community, I have observed a phenomenon. Some of my associates, clients, and friends in this spiritual sphere, on independent journeys of awakening, like to align themselves with a particular dogma or philosophy. Ultimately, they search for doctrines that tell them how one may connect with the divine. It’s useful to some extent, but when it becomes like religion, I worry.
As individual journeyers of this spiritual path of discovery, it surprises me that people reject mainstream religions but then align themselves with other spiritual groups. For me, it almost defeats the purpose of awakening. I am such a rebel when it comes to belief systems. I refuse to join any club or cult because group mentality repels me so much.
Discovering New Philosophies
There’s this attachment with ideologies and even idols that is easy to develop if you’re not careful. When you are realizing your spirituality, you naturally gravitate toward certain spiritual leaders and philosophies.
It goes too far when there’s a strong attachment to certain systems that people may accept without questioning, just because they’re told to believe it.
It’s hard for people to verify what’s true if they don’t have a strong intuition about the unseen. But that’s okay — a blind plunge is what faith requires. Putting all your faith in the words of someone you hardly know without feeling the connection yourself is also dangerous.
Develop Your Own Connection
I always encourage people to develop their own relationship with God (or the Universe), and to veer away from religious or spiritual systems that define everything rigidly. Spirituality is your own journey, and for me, it’s far more exciting when it’s open-ended, and there are always answers left to find out.
Things don’t have to be so clear-cut. Reality isn’t always as you believe it is. You don’t have to have all the answers. It’s an adventure when you develop a connection to unseen forces. Allowing yourself to operate with your own rules — or no rules at all — is far more satisfying when you’re a truth seeker.
I think it’s important to develop and use your individual discernment about truth and reality.
Following a Leader
People also like to name-drop and explain what they experience through the terms of a well-known spiritual leader. This is often because they’re not yet comfortable with using their own words to explain spirituality. I went through this phase, too.
Some of these leaders have found success in getting their voice heard by the masses. So, it becomes a trend for people to latch onto an ideology and then evangelize others by talking about it all the time — quoting others instead of developing their own philosophy through an inner journey. I can’t tell you how many people name-drop and recommend books in my comment sections instead of telling me what resonates with them.
I can’t say this enough: this is your life. It’s your choice what to believe. You can establish your own connection with the divine. You don’t need to marry yourself to the philosophies in books — you can use them to develop your own ideas, and then write your own book.
