The concept doesn’t have to define your decisions.
I have always said that the concept of a “twin flame” is a label. It’s a framework for understanding a very weird experience. Thank god that we have such a label! It helps us connect with the information and people we need to understand this path. It’s a useful search term and a meeting point for a variety of spiritual experiences that we may have.
The term ‘twin flame’ helps us understand an awakening that happens as a result of meeting another soul that deeply impacts us. It’s something that transcends language and is embedded in the human psyche. It’s shown up in stories throughout human history under different names and guises. (Think Adam and Eve, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Romeo and Juliet.)
When people find out about twin flames, a lot of them take it as objective truth. They learn about all the “rules” and dogmas attached to the concept and then let it get to their heads. They begin to base their reality on this concept, allowing it to dictate decisions that they make — decisions which may otherwise be bad ones.
Whether or not twin flames are a real thing, you should always do what you believe to be the right thing and learn your lessons from the universe along the way. Just because something seems to be a spiritual truth doesn’t validate you acting on your urges and obsessions.
Some people on this path recognize immediately that they aren’t meant to be in a romantic relationship with their twin flame, and that it’s primarily a catalyst for their spiritual awakening. Often, the term “twin flame” is mixed up with the concept of a “master” or a soul that comes in to teach you something valuable.
Ultimately, all spiritual awakenings lead you to look within and come into divine union — not to look outside yourself. You’re not meant to attach yourself to the idea of being with your twin flame — the goal is, in fact, the opposite. It’s supposed to be an inner journey.
I often remind my clients that “twin flame” is just a label for an incredible spiritual love experience, but it might be called something else. (The terms “twin soul” and “divine counterpart” could be used instead to convey the same idea.) We can define it as a transcendental experience that starts when you meet someone who has a soul connection with you. This removes the requirement that we deserve to “end up” with our twin flames.
It’s a love story of your inner awakening, not a love story of coming together with another human in a relationship.
You may end up with your twin flame anyway. Or you might not. Your happiness and peace shouldn’t depend on this. It’s all a lesson in your ability to find inner union — a state of bliss, love, and satisfaction for life.
Inner union and enlightenment can happen regardless of your situation in your physical reality. It’s a journey of discovering your true reality — the one that is eternal — your soul reality.
