It’s well-known in the spiritual community that in order to have a happy, purposeful, valuable existence, you have to try to keep positive. Your thoughts have to be sunny. Your belief and hope in the future must grow. Your vibrations must stay high. There’s no other way. Negative people just don’t have good things happen to them — you have to dream big and stay smiling.

I fully understand this. And yet sometimes I lack the answer to the most crucial question: why? That answer seems to come and go, and I try everything in my power to keep it stable. Without that basic motivation to manifest a happy life, none of it matters.

I think this is what they call “the dark night of the soul.” I go into them every now and then. It may be a necessary part of my learning as a soul to lose faith in the universe and therefore care about nothing anymore. I have periods where I have grasped the nature of existence and why I’m here on Earth, but because this is just one blip in a big story of my soul, I start to lose touch with the excitement of being human and the need to live life to its fullest with my time on Earth.

Seems silly, doesn’t it? But there it is. I sometimes just don’t know what reason there is to even try.

I can’t help but wonder, what if you just don’t have the will to live? Should you pretend to be happy? What’s the spiritual/moral recommendation for when someone just doesn’t even care anymore about participating in all of this “life on Earth” stuff?

Spiritually, when you lose the excitement and will to live, you are still able to play the role you’re here to play. But you could be empty inside. You could be grasping for a reason to be here. And I don’t mean when you’re suicidal, that’s different — I mean that you just feel dead inside. And it’s possible to be a really good actor and play your role beautifully anyway.

But should you?

I leave this question up to my readers. I don’t have the answer. In the next dark night of the soul that comes for you, think about this question. Is it possible to know why you’re here, play the role, but also not be fully committed to it?
