I think it’s important to recharge ourselves just like we recharge our phone batteries. It’s tempting to think that sleep and other restful activities like watching TV are enough to recharge. But I think that to really recharge, we have to plug into the universe.

What does that mean? Well, it means you have to meditate.

I’m going to tell you how to meditate to connect with the universe. After meditating for years and becoming a certified meditation instructor, I have learned something. Meditation can mean many, many things. For some, it means relaxation. For some, it means moving the mind away from busy thoughts. And for others like myself, it means connecting with the soul — and the realm that exists beyond the five senses.

I don’t often meditate in a way that my thoughts are “stopped”. I usually end up entering a place of total bliss where those thoughts are still observable, but they just don’t affect me in the same way that they would in my day-to-day waking life. I’m plugged into the universe.

Here are some of the ways things go down during my meditations.

I Tell Myself ‘I Am Not Me’

In meditation, the biggest thing is letting go of the ego. The ego allows us to think of ourselves as individuals. It’s where we get the perspective of being a person apart from other persons. From the experience of the ego, we employ terms like “I”, “me”, and “mine”.

To start my meditation, I tell myself that I am not me. There’s no “I”. There’s no “me”; there’s just oneness. I am a mind, but a mind doesn’t need to attach to any one identity. All of my stressors fall away because they’re associated with the “me” that I am leaving aside for now. It’s a really peaceful place to be.

I Experience Boundaries Blurring

Boundaries start to dissolve, letting it become apparent that there is no separation between me and the rest of existence. The edges between me and the world begin to blur. When I embrace this new place where identity is fluid, I’m in a place where everything makes sense.

Without the pull to identify as an individual “me”, it’s natural that it becomes easier to connect with the world around me. I imagine my physical body melding with all of the known environment around me. More importantly, I feel my mind becoming one with all minds around me.

I Find Bliss

At this point, I often end up in a place of evenness, equanimity, and flow. These practices help me get toward bliss. That’s a place of non-attachment where thoughts and actions can have involvement with me but not feel like they’re undeniably part of my existence. They’re just part of existence. This makes all the difference.

Meditate to connect with the universe and with bliss. When we practice these things, daily life becomes a bit easier. Even if it’s sometimes difficult to carry this feeling of bliss with us all the time, reality just seems to be better and better. Being recharged by the universe does wonders.
