Navigating Your Career After Spiritual Awakening

An important part of my spiritual awakening occurred a few years ago just after I had decided to enroll in classes to become a holistic health coach. I was a software engineer at the time and I’d been a teacher before that. I’d already gone through several iterations of my work and career life, and wasn’t ready for a whole new thing to happen in that realm. But I knew that I wanted to spread knowledge and wisdom of spiritual healing. I didn’t really know the immensity of this decision. Navigating your career after a spiritual awakening can become a great adventure but it’s also challenging.

I must have sent a signal out into the universe that I was ready for something enormous to shift in my life. They shifted pretty quickly and with massive ramifications for me.

I participated in a conference called Bioneers during the same month I had decided to get certified to teach Ayurveda. I was in the process of losing my job and I was overwhelmed and confused. I thought I still wanted to be a software engineer because I was making a lot of money, but I could see I was on my way out against my will. I was scared to death of supporting my daughter as an unemployed single mom. But other magical things were happening, leading me down the proper path for me. It was a transition period in my life. Incidentally, that was the same month I also started writing on Medium about spiritual topics.

During this conference, I took part in a guided soul journey, like a meditation, where I was compelled to face my soul and ask the universe questions. I was guided to ask “Who am I?” and the answer astonished me. I heard “I am a healer.” I saw a vision of myself rushing in to save someone with spiritual energy work. I couldn’t believe it. I almost fell off my chair.

“But I’m a software engineer,” I said to myself. “What on Earth does this mean? I don’t know how to be a healer.”

But some part of my soul knew it. I knew it was a familiar concept. Perhaps it is work I did in a previous existence. It seemed strangely normal to me. I was comfortable with it, and yet I had never been presented with it in this lifetime.

Some part of me knew I was a healer and it only took that one guided meditation experience to awaken the idea inside me.

I was shocked by the idea of being a healer as my soul’s purpose and shocked at my own feeling of ease in finding this out. It was a moment of great realization and emotions. I had finally come home to myself.

Ironically, now I lead guided meditations where I compel my students to ask themselves “Who am I?” and I’m the one opening that same door for countless others. I am a healer who helps people understand their purpose.

My story is not so unique. Countless of my clients describe their spiritual awakening the same way. As soon as they awoke to the idea that their true purpose was to help people, they found themselves dissatisfied with their current work. And the universe started to push them out of it.

Everyone’s soul purpose is to help the collective in some way. Maybe you only touch a few lives, or maybe you touch a million. If you’re helping to elevate others, you’re aligning with the universe.

We all have a unique gift to offer the rest of humanity. That’s what makes it interesting. We can all be of service to each other in vastly different ways.

Some of us are artists who inspire. Others are communicators who speak and write to spread messages of love and healing. Still some of us are connectors who bring people together who need to know each other. Maybe you are a natural teacher who can help others gain confidence in themselves. Maybe you are uniquely inclined to help and protect animals. (They’re part of the collective, too.) Whatever your purpose is, I know it’s something to do with a cause that is bigger than yourself.

If you’re having an awakening and going through this process of wondering who you really are, there are things you can do to open yourself up more to understanding. Here are some ideas:

  • You can let go of attachments to things you wanted before that no longer align.
  • You can follow the trail of coincidences and opportunities the universe has brought to your door.
  • You can meditate and gain awareness of what’s within.
  • Or, you work with me in one of my sessions or courses.

Your task is only to understand the self a little more every day until you know what it is you’re meant to be doing for the world. Then, go do it!
