Don’t fall into a trap of entitlement to darkness.
Some people argue that the law of attraction is not real and the basic premise of it is “victim-blaming”. But I’m here to tell you that this isn’t true — it’s only victim-blaming when you’re in a victim’s mindset about life. If you buy into the law of attraction, it becomes your superpower. But there are things you must understand about it.
There are those in the spiritual community who will go to lengths to convince you that negativity is part of life and depression is part of being human. They don’t want to give up the part of them that is sad or angry, so they defend it. This is how the ego fights to hold onto control. It is not a conducive mentality to your spiritual path, trust me.
Attaching to the Negativity
When you’re in a state of depression, there’s a phenomenon that happens. It starts to become part of your basic identity. Rather than allow the sadness or heartbreak to flow through you, eventually drifting into the distance, you may feel tempted to attach to it. You feel entitled to it.
When people comment on your mental state and suggest that you should think positively, you may feel validated in defending it. Some people defend their depression rabidly. They will even argue that it’s harmful to tell people to stay positive. (I disagree, and I will explain in a moment.)
You may already have an awareness that you should be staying positive when you’re experiencing hopelessness. This is where guilt enters the picture, which ironically counteracts the law of attraction.
It’s difficult to be spiritual and depressed. When you’ve entered the dark night of the soul, there’s a certain wisdom that comes with it that you aren’t meant to be depressed. You know, deep down, that negative thinking is wrong. You are aware that you must stay grateful and keep away from a lack mindset. It’s a blessing simply to be alive. And yet, it’s so dang hard.
The Law of Attraction
You may be familiar with the law of attraction. It’s all about keeping a high vibration so that you can attract abundance into your life. Inevitably, on this journey, someone will suggest that you can get out of depression by using the law of attraction.
They’ll tell you that when you think positively, you attract positive things into your life. However, when you’re in a very low mood, it feels insulting to hear that you are betraying yourself by being in such a headspace. (It’s only insulting because you’ve attached yourself to it and defined yourself by it.) Furthermore, it’s incredibly hard to pull yourself out of heavy sadness and heartbreak, especially to be in a seemingly arbitrary abundance mindset.
In a state of grief or heartbreak, it can be very insulting to be told that you attract and create with your inner state. It’s also not entirely true.
I caution anyone who defends their darkness and wards off positivity by claiming that you’re entitled to depression. I have been to the dark side and back, experiencing a dark night of the soul as many of us do. I have seen the law of attraction in action, and it’s real. You may not like it, but you can’t deny it.
How I’ve Witnessed the Law of Attraction
When I am in a low vibration, I notice that things don’t go my way. I must be vigilant of my mental state and not allow myself to slip into a perpetual forlorn mentality. Hopelessness is not my friend.
I have less success in my business when I am not grateful, for instance. My relationships also suffer when I am feeling angry at the world. If I have a lack mindset, then fewer resources and opportunities come my way. I have consciously tracked this over the years.
When I am feeling happy to be alive, grateful for all I have, and full of joy, I notice how I attract all the good things into my life in a big way. It is undeniable, at least from my perspective.
Don’t fall into the trap of self-pity and entitlement to your darkness. That is a barrier between you and a good life.
You always have a choice about whether to attach to your sadness or let it float away. Sadness is not your burden to carry. It is just a passing mental state.
The dark night of the soul will teach you heavy lessons, and one of them I had to learn is that no matter how validated I feel in my hopelessness, sadness, and anger, I must let it go. Otherwise, it will eat me alive. A low vibration is self-destructive and it’s contagious.
You don’t want a sad state of affairs in your existence. You want happiness. You want all the good things to happen to you. So, you must believe in them and turn your inner state into the place you want to live.
The Law of Attraction Doesn’t Solve Everything
The law of attraction is complex. Positive thinking alone doesn’t solve all your problems. There are multiple layers of reality and different forces at work in our lives. The human will is only one piece of that greater puzzle.
There is also something called destiny, which is immovable. Our freewill to choose positivity can’t change some of the things we are destined for.
Referring to the law of attraction as “victim-blaming” comes from a very simplistic understanding of spiritual reality. You’re not a victim because there are some parts of your life which are meant for you and you could never have changed them. But don’t you want to change the things you can?
We don’t control everything with our minds. But I know from my experience that we control a lot. Why abandon positive thinking just because you can’t control some of your destiny? Don’t you want to recognize the things you can control and wield the power of your will over your reality, even if it only changes part of it? Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. We can do a lot with the law of attraction and our mental vibrations.
