As I progress on the path toward a higher consciousness, I get more and more clarity on the journey. Having passed a certain rung on the ladder or step on the staircase upward, I can look back and see where I was susceptible to pitfalls before. One of these spiritual pitfalls is believing that you don’t have to be enlightened because you’re human. A real spiritual seeker wants to go all the way.
Many spiritual seekers try to convince themselves that spiritual concepts are hard so it’s okay if you’re not perfect. You can stay in the middle, existing between the extremes of your basest primitive desires and your highest spiritual pursuits. This sounds good on the surface, but let’s dig deeper into what this means.
Imperfectly Human or Miserably Human?
When people say that they are integrating their imperfect humanity into their spiritual practices, in fact, they are embracing mediocrity on the spiritual path. They know there’s a higher meaning to life, and often they know they’re supposed to be unattached to what’s going on in the material world, and yet they don’t want to embody the highest possible spiritual state of consciousness because they are very comfortable being human.
There are plenty of spiritual teachers who will tell you that it’s okay to be depressed, anxious, and generally miserable. That’s human, they’ll say. They’ll give you thought-out theories about why staying positive is not a good idea and you’re allowed to have negative thoughts all the time because you deserve to stay miserable if you want to. They don’t believe that there’s a way to escape misery, so they don’t even try.
Especially if they have achieved “success” in the physical realm, why would they willingly give that up to go within? This is a very hard thing to do, and often, the universe ends up forcing us to do so through tragic or shocking life events.
They’ll Defend Mediocrity
The ego will defend what it’s hanging onto, and convince you that you can use logic to stay attached to the material world. The ego is strong and will overpower your spiritual mind if you aren’t vigilant. It will prevent you from attaining enlightenment and make you content with mediocrity.
Even the most seemingly enlightened person can experience this pitfall if they haven’t committed themselves to releasing the ego and all the human attachments of life. Very smart people will give you sensible arguments about why they are very spiritual while also embracing mediocrity on the path.
Keep in mind that you can intellectually understand a lot about spiritual concepts without ever putting them into practice. Some of the world’s greatest spiritual “gurus” don’t actually embody the concepts they preach. And that becomes obvious to you when you embody them. Use your judgment to discern the right from the wrong path, because there is no middle ground.
The Reasons We Abandon Higher Pursuits
Many people who realize that fame and fortune may find them on the path will gladly embrace these mediocre spiritual ideas that I just described. If they start to gain a following and see that their spiritual message will earn them money or notoriety, they’ll quickly shift back into the ego. They’ll try to follow a “middle” path between being human (or messy) and enlightened just so they can justify staying attached to these worldly things.
They don’t want to lose their money and status, so they will tell you that attaching to such things is very spiritual. Some of them will even tell you that being sexual is normal, so you can legitimately engage in mindless sex with strangers or weird sexual obsessions — and forget all about seeking higher love. Others will argue that being depressed and angry about life is normal so you should keep doing it because “other people” are mean.
They’ll defend these ideas rapidly to protect themselves. They’ll try anything to fit worldly pursuits and negativity into their spiritual search.
Especially those experiencing some level of success in helping others will succumb to the temptation of attention and notoriety fairly quickly. It’s astonishing how willingly they will give up the great inner treasure they were going toward. Ironically, they don’t see that this very situation or opportunity is a test from the universe to see if they’ll continue climbing the ladder toward bliss or get distracted off the path.
Our Divine Inner Connection
Being human is hard, I don’t deny it. It’s an existence full of tension, darkness, and doubts. But we are gifted with a complex consciousness that helps us understand that there’s more than what the five senses tell us. As humans, we always retain some level of connection to our higher selves and divine source.
Inside us all, there’s a voice telling us that the material world isn’t where existence stops. We don’t have to keep reaching toward the attainment of something seemingly impossible, because all the wisdom is already within us. And yet, the five senses continually lure us with the promise of material wealth, status, relationships, and whatnot — things that may give us temporary happiness. We keep chasing these things. It’s almost like buying into a pyramid scheme.
In this pyramid scheme of life, we keep chasing what we think will make us happy. But that happiness only exists outside us in the material world. It will never satisfy us.
We can tell ourselves whatever stories we like about why it’s acceptable to chase money, objects, and status, but the more we actually do this, the more miserable we get. Pretty soon, we may find ourselves sitting on a mountain of acquired material possessions and addictions but without any inner satisfaction to show for it. It’s a trick that you don’t want to fall for.
Instead, seek answers and wisdom within. Listen to yourself deeply. Ask yourself what value fame, fortune, relationships, or social status may add to your life. Find that answer yourself without asking any spiritual teachers. You already know, and you don’t need to hear it from a source outside you.
