Many of my readers have experienced the spiritual journey known as ego death. It’s when you lose all basis for your identity, interest in the world around you, and you feel like you’re spiraling without anything to anchor you as a person. You’d think it would be a wonderful experience, but it can be dark. However, there is a way to survive it and allow it to transform your life. I’ll tell you from my own experience how to survive ego death to find a higher consciousness: bliss.

Ego death is the sought-after “non-attachment” that Buddhists speak of. The problem for most people in the modern, materialistic world is that preserving a feeling of non-attachment is a feat that requires incredible strength. If we were surrounded by Buddhist monks in a monastery, perhaps it wouldn’t be so difficult to live a life of purity.

Instead of experiencing happiness that enlightenment is within reach, many of us are left feeling uncomfortable during this process. We don’t know who we are or how to operate in the world anymore. This is a scary place to be.

We must emerge from the process of ego death with something to show for it. Instead of feeling sad or out of touch, there is an opportunity to elevate ourselves. We have a choice. Option 1: We can feel so estranged that we inevitably return to an attachment to the outside world and all of its material pursuits. Option 2: We can replace the feeling of emptiness with joy. We can flip the script and use it as a springboard toward inner peace.

When the awakening of ego death begins its purging, we must set an intention to stick with it and embrace its magic. Ego death often happens spontaneously, without warning or choice. But when it happens, we can make a choice: don’t allow it to get you down. It is not meant to be depressing. Change your perspective. It’s a liberation, not a punishment.

Being unattached to material things, the outcomes of situations, and your status in social networks is a glorious gift. It may seem terrifying to find yourself without any reason to get out of bed in the morning. There is an emptiness within that is desperate to be filled. But be strong; do not allow that emptiness to be filled up again with attachments. Instead, intentionally fill it with the joy of freedom.

Don’t allow the void to consume you. Let it liberate you.

Say thank you to the universe for this experience. Take this opportunity to walk outside and experience the world without any attachments. Feel the joy and bliss that accompany such liberation. You finally get to experience your life for what it really is. You’ve come home to the here and now. Find grace in the ability to be fully present.

So, if you find yourself navigating the aftermath of the obliteration of the ego’s attachments, remember that the choice is always yours. You’re only sad because you’re so used to deriving joy from things outside you. Now is the time to embrace inner bliss.
