You may have heard people advising you to live more in the present moment. Be here and now, they’ll say. But what does this really mean? How do we live fully in the present moment?

We have no choice but to be in the present moment — because that’s all there is. You couldn’t be anywhere else even if you tried.

What “being in the present moment” really means is this: you are understanding reality. You acknowledge that the present moment is all that exists. Time isn’t what we usually think. We perceive it as flowing, or as us traveling through it. But in fact, we’ve never been anywhere but in the present.

Time is an illusion.

The past is a memory and the future is a possibility. But when we “arrive” at the perceived future, it is the present. We can’t reach outside here and now to anywhere else. This present moment is the only real time. The past and future are illusions.

So, when we say to “be more in the present moment” what we really mean is to let go of fear. Stop worrying about the past, which isn’t real anyway, and stop having anxiety about what could happen in the future. Neither of these times is real right now. You only have the present moment — why fill it with worries and stress?

Let go.

Be fully in the present moment with your approach to life. Understand that the present is dynamic, it’s full of possibilities, and the experience of it depends on your mindset. If you see it as scary and static, then you will struggle with your daily life. You will constantly be regretting the past and hoping for a better future, focusing on things that aren’t real.

You don’t want to focus on illusions — they will not get you far.

This is about freeing the mind of the constraints of time. When you completely understand that the present moment is all there ever was, you won’t need to force yourself to be here and now. You will just have to connect fully with reality. It will be a process of letting go. It will be natural.

Preconceived notions of time that humanity collectively set up in our minds will fall away, and you’ll be living in the present moment without even having to do anything.

The present moment does flow. It is elusive. It is magical. Every “now” is slightly different. It’s something that no one can fully grasp or explain, and yet we’re in it all the time. It’s all we’ve ever known. It allows us to experience anticipation, wonder, soul lessons, and uncertainty. It’s a miracle.

Practice gratitude for being here. Embrace the fact that what you have right now is exactly what you need. This is part of being fully present.

Don’t let the present moment be your prison. Understand that it’s the only real thing in your experience of time, and let it become your liberation.
