I’m convinced that the world is not made up of random events. Objects don’t embark on movements of meaningless trajectories, bumping into each other in the night. There’s a great balance and harmony of happenings in this world that we share. All of this is suspended in space and time by a great tapestry of meaning. There’s a plan.
I am going to let you in on one of my little secrets. I keep a diary, but it isn’t to write down ego-based longings and happenings on the surface level of life. Ever since I started writing down daily coincidences and weird occurrences, it has become a spiritual diary where I also include my daily interpretations of these things.
Keeping a record of the unusual things that have happened to me helps me stay connected to the divine messages coming to me all the time. I am able to look back over my notes and see patterns. Then, I can anticipate what’s happening to me the next time I encounter a similar pattern.
In itself, being in tune with life is a huge relief because it’s a way to keep a connection with what’s really going on in this play called life. But beyond the mere connection, we can learn to interpret these things, too. We can have a better life. Let me teach you a little bit about how I try to read the script of this play by understanding synchronicities.
A Journal That I Call “The Script”
I keep a little journal, as I mentioned before. It doesn’t contain pages of writings about my office crush or the fact that I cried for no reason. I don’t write about the friends who dumped me or my interactions at work. I don’t focus on the plot of this show in terms of the role I am playing — that’s like writing down the script as it’s happening and unfolding, just as an actor would write the script as they’re playing out their role. (This is exhausting and probably impossible.)
Instead, I try to write down the script’s stage directions — the signs.
I also have another journal where I write out my feelings, descriptions of the people special to me, and my spiritual mental breakdowns. But “the script”, as I call it, is a little book without my feelings or ego attachments in it — it’s just the unusual things that happen to me in daily life as seen from an unattached perspective. I try to write it and read it literally as if it’s a script for a play, without emotional investment or expectation.
It’s been working out well so far.
Noticing Unusual Things
Have you seen a white feather falling from the sky? Have you noticed an unusually frequent occurrence of the number 33? Have there been firetrucks everywhere you go? Is everyone new you meet named Rich or Richie?
The other day, my parents’ Havanese went into a bush and came out with the head of a rabbit in her mouth. A while later, she went back in and came out with a decapitated rabbit. I knew that was a big one. I wrote it down in my book. I listened to my intuition about what it could mean. I heard “heads will roll” in my mind.
And indeed they did roll. It was a warning from the universe for something that unfolded that night.
(For the record, the dog probably found the rabbit in that state and didn’t separate its sweet little head from its body.)
Understanding Collective Archetypes and Symbols
In the beginning, I googled a lot of the meanings behind things. I also enjoy dream interpretation, so I was no stranger to finding spiritual meaning in anything and everything. When I finally woke up to the fact that waking life has as much spiritual meaning in its manifestations as dream life, it became more obvious what things might mean.
Animals represent certain energies and aspects of ourselves. Repeated numbers like 111 mean some aspect of ourselves is aligning with the universe. Weird behaviors or names in what seems like a “side story” in the periphery of your attention carry some kind of essence about the greater plot. Alarms that go off at strange times are trying to get you to pay attention to something urgent.
When this stuff happens, write it down. Then you can start tracking when they happened and how.
Focusing on the Messages, Not the Signs
A lot of people I know can’t seem to get past the constant signs and synchronicities to the actual meaning behind them. They intellectually understand the meaning but they won’t surrender themselves to the message to finally know how to change their behavior to live a better life.
They don’t ignore the signs, but they don’t integrate the messages into their lives either. Like someone who reads a spiritual book to understand the soul but not feel it, they put the book of life down and walk away having learned nothing.
You need to focus on the messages, not the signs themselves. Stop taking pictures of all the 44’s you see and talking about the repeated patterns on the surface. Think every single time about why this might be happening.
Looking for Patterns and Being Ready
After you’ve had a few weeks or even days of recording signs in this script journal, you can start to re-read it and look for patterns. You may start to laugh out loud from all the ironies you are seeing.
Whereas before, you were focusing on one synchronicity or sign at a time, you can now see it all in a bigger picture. It makes a huge difference.
Revelations will hit you. Certain things that happened in succession will seem to make total sense. One day, if something ended and then the next day something started, you can see the great purpose in it. In the moment it seemed unrelated, but you can start to see that things are connected. Now it really seems like it’s all a script! Like this was all planned out and written perfectly.
Start to notice what usually precedes what. Understand that certain signs represent certain phases of your life. Learn to navigate the choppy waters of your life with more ease.
Getting Out of the Head
I’ll end here by saying something very important: you have to surrender to the feeling of it instead of all the analysis. There is no playbook or dictionary for all of this. When you google the symbolism of things in your life, there isn’t always a very clear answer. You just have to feel into it for yourself and let your heart understand it.
Sometimes, signs and synchronicities are super personal and won’t mean the same thing they mean for others. You know what they mean in your own heart. Surrender to the knowingness.
This is how I read tarot, by the way. I don’t read cards with a ‘textbook’ meaning — they’re archetypal energies that mean something different each time I see them. I feel the meanings instead of forcing myself to recite the meanings that some authority on tarot has defined.
Read your signs like reading cards. Follow the cues of your life with ease. Trust that signs always come in and you can be better prepared for life’s ups and downs if you can understand the patterns all around you.
Nothing is meaningless. Everything happens for a reason. All of reality is working together and with itself to exist. The universe is exactly as it should be.
