Even spiritual people often can’t focus their attention inward. All too often, we cling to objects and messages outside us to provide the answers we seek.

We can make all the plans in the world to become more spiritual. We can follow astrology and practice energetic cleansing. Efforts may be put into living in harmony with nature and the moon cycles. We can buy all the crystals and attend acupuncture appointments to no end. But it doesn’t matter. If you’re allowing anything outside you to alter your mood, thoughts, or life path, then you are attached to the external world. A deep spiritual understanding means understanding that you are the master of your own reality.

What You Seek is Within

Spiritual people often still resist looking within for all the solutions — they cling to what’s outside them to bring them peace. Ironically, all of the peace they sought was always inside them — they just needed to clear out the distractions of these material things in order to connect with it.

Being dependent on crystals, plant medicine, planet placements, energy healing, and even wisdom from books is a pit that many folks seem to fall into. Part of the true spiritual path is releasing the attachment to any and all sources of elevation outside you. You should be able to provide the final answer for yourself.

Without true inner work, you haven’t grasped your spiritual nature fully. Classes, healings, and spiritual talismans only take you so far.

Focus on the Other Side of Life

“How do I do the inner work?” is a valid question that many have asked me when I raise this issue. If you have never experienced it, it’s hard to conceptualize.

Our human nature combined with the conditioning of society has made us completely reliant on the outside world. We aren’t told that an inner world exists, so why would we seek it? Most of us aren’t even aware that there is a whole other realm within.

We are taught to believe that the physical world is everything. Science makes us distrustful of anything we can’t observe with the five senses. So, humanity doesn’t even seek the other side of life. But you can change that. You can strive to do the inner work.

It takes a lot of effort. It’s huge. This is not a hobby. It isn’t a side issue in your life. When you want to do the inner work, it is all-encompassing. It will leave no part of you or your life path untouched. So you should probably be ready for that. But even with all the shifts that could occur, it is well worth it.

Climbing the ladder toward enlightenment, even if you only ascend it by one rung in this lifetime, is why you’re here. To continue to attach yourself to the material world would be a waste of your time here on Earth.

It Takes Dedication

Dedicate yourself to the inner journey. Don’t be afraid. Pay more attention to your dreams and keep track of your thought processes. Why do you have certain reactions to situations? Why do certain emotions bubble up out of nowhere? Are they controlling your life or are you in control? Try to separate yourself from your thoughts. They don’t define you.

Strip away all of the things you think are part of your identity. Your hobbies, job, relationships, and even family don’t make you who you are. You were something before all of those things. You came into this world as a soul. To do inner work, you have to determine what was there before this storyline began. Who are you, really?

When you see past the illusion of this life, you’ll understand that it’s a wondrous plot like in a storybook. Then, the things that bothered you before won’t be able to touch you. Worries and stress become powerless to you because you are merely playing a role here temporarily.

The real you is something far beyond what you see here. You are an infinite being with lifetimes beyond your recollection, bringing with you a longing for oneness and a thirst for enlightenment.

A Meditation Practice

Of course, to do inner work, I think we all have to meditate regularly. There is no better way to look within. When you meditate, you must remove all distractions and completely focus yourself inward, away from the five senses. The more you do it, the more you will get to know yourself. You will be able to answer the question, “Who am I?”

At that point, you will start to gain control over the plot of your life and things won’t seem so hard anymore.
