People are meditating more and more. This is a very good thing. While it indicates people want to heal, I am often concerned with the goal of popular meditation techniques. No effort to meditate can be harmful, but the effectiveness of the meditation should be monumental. It should be truly life-changing.

The only way for a meditation practice to make a lasting difference is for it to have a spiritual component and for it to take you beyond your mind. Meditation has transformed me, and I’ll get to that later in this article.

Guided meditations keep you relatively on the surface of your existence because you still have to connect with the voice guiding you, and it’s still a distraction from what’s within you. It makes it so you aren’t in control of your own inner healing — you are still seeking something outside you to solve a problem within you. But many people don’t even know that there’s a different way to meditate. To connect with the self and look for inner answers to inner problems, one must meditate in complete silence.

Meditate to Connect Within

If you dedicate yourself to a true meditation practice, there is nothing you can’t accomplish. The more you do it, the more you understand that everything you experience has its source in the mind. You can change what’s outside you by tempering, training, and choosing your inner state.

As you meditate in silence without the aid of a guide or ideology, you will start to feel very much in control of your life. You’re exploring your inner world, which is a liberating thing. And inevitably, you will experience higher states of consciousness.

Transcendental Experiences

You can have experiences not unlike those that occur when under the influence of plant medicine and psychedelics, but without the use of any substance. Your own mind is all you need to access altered states of being. You always had the tools. The more you meditate, the more this is obvious. There was never a time when you didn’t have control over your mental state.

To explain what I mean, I want to talk about what happens when I meditate. When I close my eyes, I slip into another place. I have crossed through the perceived limitations and edges of my own mind many times. Transcending its boundaries is quick and natural for me now. It takes a release of the string of endless thoughts, the worries about physical reality, and the attachments to what’s going on in my life. But it wasn’t always this easy. In the beginning, it was an exploration not unlike that of pioneering through an untouched frontier.

My Adventures in Higher States of Consciousness

When I was first teaching myself to meditate, sometimes I would slip into that place by surprise, and unintentionally experience a higher state of consciousness. The next time I meditated, I knew what it was supposed to feel like, so I could access it a little easier. But it took practice.

Whenever I meditate, I always learn something new about my inner world. I allow my mind to settle down further and further. It’s like a cloud of dust settling, and as my thoughts and emotions clear away slowly, I get more and more clarity. Turns out, what I usually experience in my waking consciousness is not very clear at all. My perception seems to be polluted with desires, anxieties, and worries most of the time.

In meditation, a very safe place, I get to see what’s really there. And it’s a very still and serene place.

Reality is smooth. It is filled with potential. It is balanced, self-creating, and expansive. There are no words that can truly describe the true nature of reality. But isn’t it pleasantly surprising that all of this is accessible through something within you instead of outside you?

Your Meditation Practice

Higher states of consciousness are accessible to you at any time. It takes determination to choose to experience them through the practice of meditation. It is not something that will just happen to you one day. You must choose it.

It’s a spiritual commitment. Some people don’t think they can experience it without outside help, so they go to mind-altering substances and hypnosis to get there. But with a great amount of effort, you can get there with just the power of your own mind.

The mind is an incredible thing that you have just begun to explore. You usually live on the surface of its abilities. Dive a little deeper.
