Being “Embodied” Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up to Be

embodiment

We can’t help but be in bodies.

Perhaps some people want to be more “embodied”, but I don’t. I want to be less attached to my physical body. That attachment is what causes me a lot of problems. I feel blissful in meditation when I’m not embodied — my consciousness is free, and my body can no longer be felt.

Why Embodiment May Be Popular

The spiritual community sometimes assumes a lot. It seems to be a trend to seek “embodiment” for a better quality of life. But I question this. Pursuing embodiment” may be a good thing for some people who truly need to be more “grounded”, but I don’t think it’s the solution for all people. And I don’t think most people even know what that means — they haven’t thought about it critically.

Being “embodied” is about being fully present in the physical body. A lot of people struggle with staying in the here and now. This is a valid concern. So, they think that strengthening their connection with their physical bodies will solve this problem — but it’s merely a distraction. Being fully present is a mental and spiritual experience, not a physical one.

Connecting with the Present Moment

Pursuing embodiment has little spiritual value because the physical body isn’t very important. It’s energy. It’s a manifestation of your spiritual self. It’s not the real you. You’re a soul.

The real work is in connecting with the true self, which is often found by living in the present moment. This experience does not depend on the physical body. Unfortunately, people usually don’t want to pursue anything non-physical because they can’t access it without looking within. People generally don’t want to do this. Looking within takes work and can be scary.

So, they seek attachments in the physical world that will solve their problems. Many people seek an activity or ritual that will serve as a focus for their minds instead of meaningful spiritual pursuits.

The Inner Work

Embodiment is difficult because it depends on something temporary: your body. It is very hard to use something physical to create lasting change because nothing physical lasts. But people try all the time anyway, hoping that anything will be a viable alternative to doing real inner work.

Embodiment is only valuable when practiced and pursued alongside an inner spiritual journey. It has to be transcendental.

If only they’d realize that the dedicated work of meditation and explorations beyond the five senses would bring them into the present moment. The real spiritual goal is the opposite of being embodied. It’s when you realize you’re far more than your physical body.

You remove the separation between you and the world by expanding your consciousness beyond the limitations of your body, which is often like a prison. When you find oneness with the rest of the world, you can clearly see the solution to your problems. Embodiment will only become effective when worked on alongside an inner spiritual exploration.
