The concept of twin flames is as old as humanity. It comes from an ancient philosophy about life that we can trace back to Ancient Egypt. It may have origins in older civilizations that have been lost in time. Ancient systems of philosophy are also related to the Tarot. In Egyptian language, “Pta” means life, and “ro” means royal or divine. “Tarot” means “The Royal Path of Life” and it gives us a storyline of the soul’s journey toward enlightenment. It all begins with twin souls and involves their ascension toward divine union.
Both twin flames and the Tarot are very old concepts. They are not to be taken lightly. Most people approach the concept of twin flames as merely a surface-level romance story, and most people approach the Tarot with a lack of reverence for its esoteric and philosophical meaning. Both concepts hold deep historical significance for humanity, and can possibly help us unlock a new level of understanding about the meaning of our lives.

The Ancient Concept of Twin Flames
Nothing in the universe is an accident. If you’ve met your twin flame, you’re experiencing exactly what is meant to be experienced. This is a soul lesson on the nature of love. The soul craves this wisdom because it will help during the journey toward oneness. Union with the twin flame is a step in the direction of union with all things in existence.
In Qabbalistic esoteric philosophy dating back many thousands of years, it is taught that the soul, in its descent to the physical plane, splits into two. It then begins its journey over many incarnations and lifetimes back toward oneness. It must find itself again in order to have a true understanding of enlightenment.
The soul must keep evolving, and the twin flame helps it to heal and learn so that it can be ready for union. The twin soul is here to trigger your awareness that you’re a soul and that there is much more to life than what you see on the physical plane. You start to remember what’s really important in life. You begin to transcend the ego and release attachments to physical-level pursuits. The spiritual side of life is now inescapable.
We all have much work to be done while here on Earth.
In its soul-seeking, the soul must create an inner environment of union in order to attract the twin soul. There must be an awareness of the self. Union is the goal, but this may only occur on the higher planes.
Earth is a university for great learning but we are inherently separate while we are in human bodies. Separation is the root of all fear and suffering. But we have to try to turn the focus within so that we can experience divine consciousness while still incarnated here, and transcend the pain. Hence, the experience of twin flames is often a very difficult one.
The Esoteric Meaning of the Tarot
The Tarot is a story of the soul journey. Its origins rest in Qabbalistic wisdom. It is intertwined with the concept of twin flames. In the major arcana, we see the story of the soul’s journey from separation and darkness toward divine union and light.
The story contained in the Tarot archetypes tells us that the soul must endure many lessons and tests as it slowly ascends. It depicts the soul learning about polarities such as feminine and masculine energies, as well as concepts of inner alchemy. This is a process that occurs over many lifetimes. The path is often not linear as when it seems as though wisdom is attained, there is a sudden fall back toward uncertainty.
One of the major milestones in the soul’s ascension is The Sun card, which is Arcanum 19. Traditionally, this card depicts two souls coming into divine union — a lesson in the meaning of true love.
Arcanum 19 depicts a man and a woman coming together. Until this point in the journey, the soul has not truly learned about love. Many people think love means a contract or lustful attraction, but the advanced soul knows that love is a union between two souls. It is a merging of equals. Anyone familiar with their twin flame knows this to be true.
Since there are 22 major arcana, the placement of union at the 19th arcanum means that this is a point in the soul’s journey just before union with all of existence. It is a precursor to cosmic consciousness and complete understanding. It is a prerequisite for enlightenment.
Understanding Ancient Knowledge
If you don’t believe me that these concepts are ancient, I recommend reading some old occult texts such as those by C.C. Zain. I have drawn on the knowledge I gained from reading his book The Sacred Tarot to write this article, as well as wisdom from J.A. Knapp’s Divination with Tarot Cards. Any studies in the Qabbala will prove useful in your journey to understanding these concepts. I also strongly recommend reading anything on the subject by Manly P. Hall.
